Liz Walker's Story

Hold Space for Vulnerability

Being deeply connected to me is the human experience. And life today is so disconnected, even though we're more connected in many ways than we ever have been. But we're not because it's superficial.

One of my favorite things I never thought about was standing in the kitchen and processing fish. I was like, this is so awesome. I've touched fish before but I never thought that would be a cool thing to do. Growing up it's like, you catch it sweet, we're done. My dad took care of it, and we ate it.

But to have that intimate connection with what we accomplished and everyone getting involved in whatever way was best for them. That's what being human is all about. And that was really cultivated through every experience that we had this week.

I think as I go home, the biggest thing that will stick with me is just how everyone came to play in all forms. So whether it was all the fun things that we did, which, obviously that's the easiest way to play, but then when we sat around on the couch, and everyone was just there, and held space.

Right from the very first session that we had, we were elbows deep, all in without hesitation without any walls. And that, to me, is very special. We spoke about it in our last session in how that doesn't happen in real life, we don't get that and that will always be very special.

You just knew there was someone who had your back at all times, and it didn't have to be the same person, there was just that level of knowing that, there were people there, and they weren't going to let you down.

Fishing holds a really deep place in my heart. I have a ton of memories growing up doing that with my family. And now living in a landlocked state, I don't get to be on the ocean very much. So that was awesome.

People were like fishing with the rods in holders, and I was like, this is not how it's done. You have to feel the rod and you've got to feel the fish, the swell in order to connect with that. So when you told me to pick that rod up, I was like, “Yes!” This is how it's going to be but I didn't want to be in trouble. And so it was just that deeper connection and almost like following that innate feeling of what it's supposed to be.

This is where we get to do stuff that maybe you could never dream of experiencing. It was just really, really fun.

The most exciting thing about coming back is just that there's so much on offer for the outdoors, different experiences, and just to continue to deepen relationships and connection with others and with myself.

You don't have time all day to sit around talking about where you're most vulnerable, which is not a bad thing, because it's not something that is a day to day thing but it's super important.

Unless we know ourselves how can we help others in meaningful ways? That to me is part of growth that you just can't get in, in the day to day life.

I feel very lucky and loved to have this experience and grateful for Barbara for opening up her home and sharing so much of herself with everyone. That's super unique in leaders and coaches and mentors to really and truly open up in that way.
